Seeing the Possibility Before Living It
Meet Justin Jacobs, a Field Service Engineer at a global semiconductor equipment manufacturer, trained by Uptime Crew.
Before joining Uptime Crew, Justin Jacobs was moving up quickly at a small family-run company. He enjoyed the work and had taken on more responsibility, but financially he had reached the ceiling. No matter how hard he worked, there was limited room to grow.
“I was just barely staying afloat,” he says. “I realized I had hit the top of what I could make there.”
During that time, he would drive past a massive semiconductor fab rising out of the Arizona desert and think, I wish I could work somewhere like that. He applied directly to semiconductor roles but was passed over. Without prior industry experience, and with electronics skills that did not quite match what employers were seeking, the door stayed closed.
Then he came across a posting from Uptime Crew that offered something different, not just a job, but structured training and a pathway into the semiconductor industry. He applied, received a call quickly, and was selected for the opportunity to enter the program.
“It required a bit of faith,” he says. “But I jumped in fully. This felt like my best chance to step into a career that could change my life.”
Training Built for the Real Role
What immediately stood out to Justin was how intentional the program was. This was not broad or theoretical instruction. It was designed around a specific role in a specific industry.
“Our trainers knew exactly what skills and knowledge to focus on,” he explains. “That gave us a strong foundation right out of the gate.”
The two months of classroom-style training set a clear standard. Professionalism, focus, and accountability were expected from day one. Justin was especially energized by the depth of experience the trainers brought and their willingness to invest in the cohort.
“It was a little intimidating at first,” he admits. “But the experience they had and how eager they were to teach made a big difference.”
The cohort itself also mattered. Trainees came from a range of backgrounds, and the shared experience created camaraderie that carried forward into client placements.
Foundations That Made the Difference
The emphasis on safety was central to the program. Cleanroom protocols, PPE, electrical and chemical awareness, and OSHA 10 certification were all covered in depth. That preparation ensured Justin understood the expectations of working in a highly controlled semiconductor environment before beginning with the client.
The training also walked through the full semiconductor production process, providing context for what happens to wafers at each stage and at each tool. Exposure to troubleshooting methods and vacuum fundamentals added technical depth.
One of the most valuable advantages came down to language.
“There are so many acronyms in this industry,” Justin says. “We were constantly quizzed, so once we started with the client, we already had a solid vocabulary to build on.”
Today, that preparation supports his work as a Field Service Engineer in a high-performance semiconductor environment.
Growing Confidence Through Commitment
Justin is candid about the moments when he questioned himself along the way. Entering a new industry can challenge anyone’s confidence. What carried him forward was consistent effort and openness to feedback.
“I put 100 percent into every aspect of the experience,” he says. “Even when my questions felt small, they were met with thoughtful answers.”
As the weeks progressed and camaraderie deepened, his confidence grew alongside his competence. The leap of faith began to feel less like a risk and more like a turning point.
What Is Possible Now
The impact has been both practical and personal. Financial stability has reduced stress and created space to focus on growth and long-term goals.
More importantly, he finds the work itself deeply motivating.
“I get to work on some of the most advanced technology on the planet,” he says. “I look forward to going to work every day.”
He continues learning with his cohort and values the team dynamic they have built. The opportunity has also opened doors to travel across the United States and internationally, experiences he likely would not have encountered on his previous path.
“Overall, the journey with Uptime Crew has been one of the most impactful experiences of my life.”
Justin’s story reflects what happens when access meets preparation. A door that once felt closed became reachable. With structured training, high standards, and personal commitment, he moved from watching a fab rise in the distance to building a career within the industry he once admired from afar.
